Why isn't the sale of services included in a country's balance of trade?

Mostly for historical reasons, according to the friendly chatbot. Really now, considering that 3/4 of the US economy is based on services, does this XVI century methodology make any sense? So the billions in fees that Goldman Sachs, Visa etc. collect abroad count for nothing in the balance of trade?
