This topic may have been covered before, but I was wondering: Do people with millions of dollars in assets have multiple brokerage accounts? It appears that accounts are only insured up to $500,000. Do some people risk having more than $500k with a single broker?

I do not have a brokerage account. I would like to buy ETF's and deposit stock I own so I can re-invest dividends. Are there any drawbacks to opening one each at Vanguard, Fidelity and Charles Schwab just to get the feel of them and see which I prefer?
