Is it possible to move purchasing power from a IRA to brokerage via hedging?
Disclaimer I'm not doing this with my actual retirement savings. My wife has control of those lol. I want to do this with a small IRA left over from one of my previous jobs.
I was thinking of going long on a stock (with a stop loss order) that I think will go down in my IRA and taking an equal short position in my brokerage.
Obviously this could backfire and have the opposite result. Ie. Increasing my IRA cash and lowering my brokerage.
But if I do it in small increments I'm hoping over time I will get lucky on the short positions and unlucky on the long ones.
As a former gambler I know that given enough time you inevitably go on a winning or losing streak because of luck and I'm hoping to leverage that principle.
I'm well aware I could get my first 30 short positions wrong and accomplish the exact opposite of what I'm trying to do but that's a risk I'm willing to take. I also know I would be moving money from a tax deferred to a taxable account which I am okay with. Our retirement is in a really good place but we have some short term financial pressure this year due to daycare.
Thanks in advance for any insights. I am a new investor and very aware I could be missing some basic things.
