Just turned 18, looking to enter the market

Background: I just turned 18 a few days ago with around $6000 I’ve saved by working part time the past few months. I live with my parents now but will be going to engineering school in August (will have 4years of housing payed for as well as grants and funds that will cover the full cost of attendance).
I opened a vanguard account and want to start investing ASAP. I was advised to invest only in mutual funds and to ensure a balance between large, medium, small cap and international, but, the part that worries me is that all the mutual funds that caught my attention require a $3000 minimum, meaning I’m limited to only investing in 2 mutual funds. Because of this, I wanted to find index funds that have a strong variety themselves. So far, I’m looking at VTSAX and VOO.
Should I proceed with buying? Should I maybe consider ETFs to spread my money thinner?
