As my first major investment, I dumped a big chunk of savings into VOO this past Thursday. This has been just sitting in my bank account for a years - I have my retirement accounts and some money from sold RSUs in VOO already, but I just want to be able to leave my savings to grow over a long time period and finally pulled the trigger.
However, I see that just over the past week, it started to drop, and I can't help but start feeling a bit anxious about the timing of everything - whether I had really invested at the best time, or if I should have waited, or if things are about to get a lot worse. Sometimes I feel like I missed the boat.
I know every single bit of advice has been: don't try to time the market, don't actively trade, treat it as a long-term investment. But I'm still dealing with a lot of specific anxiety around the approach and whether or not this was the right decision. I have this nagging urge of pulling out my money and waiting for a better time (would be a couple hundred dollars loss I believe).
Does anyone who is a lot more experienced than me have any advice on how to deal with these types of thoughts and whether I'm on to something or not?
UPDATE: thank you all so much for the advice and reiteration that this is the right long-term strategy! I’ve been lurking these subs for a while but sometimes I forget how wonderful Reddit can be to engage in and how many people are willing to share their experiences. since I’m newer to this I had this irrational feeling I was missing something basic but I appreciate the clear examples of how long term investing (even with occasional dips) still beats trying to time the market or pull out at the first bump. I do have an emergency fund, so I will be committing to VOO and chill for this investment, and intermittently investing more as time goes on!
