Nike has been the source of a lot of questions over the last several months. This is a classic case of not realizing the fundamental investment thesis has changed when owning a company with no barriers to entry or strong brand identification.
Some of the best advice I ever got was from a retired Lehman trader. When I was young, I’d chase price. It’s the natural tendency of most new traders. After he did some coaching with me, I understood the difference between price and value.
Is there a price I would buy Nike? Probably, but the company has a long way to go to get their story right and it might be a while. Maybe they get back to being the company I remember from the 1990s. Maybe not, but the burden is on them to demonstrate a compelling investment case.
