Trump says U.S. will hike Canada auto tariffs to 50% as trade war escalates

This auto tariff escalation with Canada is going to absolutely wreck the supply chain for Ford and GM if it actually goes through. The auto sector basically runs entirely on a just-in-time model where parts cross back and forth over the Canadian border a ton of times before the car is even finished. Slapping a 50% tariff on the Canadian side means massive margin compression for anyone heavily reliant on Ontario plants.

Beyond the big OEMs, tier 1 suppliers like Magna International are probably going to see immediate downward earnings revisions because of how deeply integrated they are in cross-border trade. Even domestic US part suppliers are going to get hit by input cost inflation on raw materials, which kills any short-term protectionist upside.

With Carney promising dollar-for-dollar retaliation on steel, dairy, and tech by September 8th, we are looking at real supply-side price shocks. It definitely complicates the macro picture and could keep inflation sticky right when central banks are trying to ease. Probably a good time to rotate out of cyclical auto stocks and move into safer domestic industrials or staples until this trade war cools off.
