38M Canadian with Defined Benefit Pension: Looking for Honest Criticism of My LongTerm Investment Plan
I’ve spent the last couple months building an investment strategy that I plan on sticking with for the next 30+ years. Before I lock it in, I figured I’d throw it out here and let Reddit do what Reddit does lol.
I’m not looking for people to tell me it’s perfect. I’d actually rather you tell me where you think I’m screwing up.
**About me**
* 38 years old
* Canadian
* Married with 2 young kids
* Stable career making roughly $195k/year
* Defined benefit pension when I retire
* Long investment horizon (25-30+ years)
* High risk tolerance
* Goal is simple… make as much money as possible before retirement.
**Current situation**
* $90k currently invested
* Another $120k sitting aside for a house next year, so don’t include that in the portfolio.
* Investing $4,000/month until the end of 2028, then bumping it to $4,500/month after that.
* Everything will be automated and I’ll only look at it once a year.
**Portfolio**
* 80% XEQT
* 10-15% VOO
* 5% SMH
* 0-5% SCHD
* Max 5% in higher conviction plays (SpaceX, Anduril… stuff like that if/when available.)
**Contribution priority**
1. RRSP first (maximize the tax benefit)
2. TFSA with the RRSP refund
3. FHSA until I buy the house
4. Taxable account last
**Rules I’m trying to live by**
* Invest every month regardless of what the market is doing.
* Never panic sell.
* Never chase whatever’s hot this year.
* Rebalance once a year and otherwise leave it alone.
* Don’t change the plan unless my life changes, or there’s really strong long-term evidence I’m wrong.
I’ve gone back and forth on this thing way more than I’d like to admit. At this point I’m trying to build something I can actually stick with for decades instead of always wondering if I should be doing something different.
So… if this was your money, what would you change?
Rip it apart. Tell me if I’m overweight somewhere, missing something obvious, overthinking it, whatever. I’m genuinely interested in hearing both sides. If everyone tells me “just buy XEQT and touch grass”, fair enough lol.
