How to hedge my positions, if my broker doesn't allow me to trade options?

I'd like to hedge my positions against a possible downturn, but unfortunately Interactive Brokers doesn't let me buy option contracts, no matter how I tweak the settings. Without this tool, how could I trade the downtrend periods? Any other possibilities?
