WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that President Trump’s sweeping global tariffs were unlawful, striking down a central pillar of his second-term trade policy.
The Court found that the administration overstepped its authority by invoking federal emergency powers to impose broad “reciprocal” tariffs on imports from nearly all countries. According to estimates cited in the case, the tariffs were projected to generate roughly $1.5 trillion over the next decade and represented a majority of the duties introduced during Trump’s current term.
Trump had framed the measures as necessary responses to trade imbalances and the fentanyl crisis, declaring both issues national emergencies. The policy included a 10% baseline tariff on most imports, alongside higher targeted levies on specific countries. Business groups and several states challenged the move, arguing that such broad taxation authority rests with Congress, not the executive branch.
The decision creates immediate uncertainty around future trade enforcement and raises questions about how the administration will recalibrate its economic strategy.
