Why would a retail investor invest in anything other than an index fund?

I don’t understand from my fairly limited research and exposure why anyone would try and beat the market and not just invest in an index fund. Is it literally that people want to try and get rich quick? Is that why they say like 90% of retail investors lose out? I feel like this should be taught in schools
