Best savings options for kids?

I have 2 kids and I want to start some sort of savings accounts for their future. I know less than nothing about investing. I've never had much and I don't want my kids to struggle the way my husband and I have. What is the best, smartest, most beneficial, etc way to set aside money for them to grow until they're adults. Nothing crazy, just $20-25/week until they're 18. I'm not sold on a 529. I want them to be able to use the money for whatever/ whenever they need, a car, a down-payment on a house, education, whatever (within reason and obviously will encourage them to be responsible and continue to save).

If you're going to recommend investing, please talk to me like I'm a child because I know zero about investing. I want something easy that I can set up automatic deposits every pay day and kind of set it and forget it and watch it grow.
