I’m 20, not a trader, and I don’t have much experience in the market. I have about $15k invested total and I’m thinking about putting around 30% of it into a high-risk idea. I want honest opinions, not hype.
My thinking is this:
Venezuela has huge oil reserves, and if the U.S. ever seriously eases sanctions or expands licenses, their oil industry would need a lot of rebuilding. That wouldn’t be fast, but eventually someone has to do the work.
Instead of betting on Venezuela directly, I’m looking at companies around it:
– Chevron (CVX) since they’re already involved there
– Oilfield service companies like SLB, HAL, BKR if rebuilding actually starts
– Gulf Coast refiners like VLO, MPC, PSX that can handle heavy crude if Venezuelan oil comes back
What I’m unsure about and want feedback on:
– Is this already priced in and I’m late to the idea?
– If this ever happens, are we talking months or years before it matters?
– Are oilfield service companies a bad idea here because of sanctions, corruption, or not getting paid?
– If you were making a small speculative bet like this, would you focus on one angle or avoid it completely?
– What would be clear signs that this idea is wrong and I should move on?
I’m not trying to get rich quick or act like I know everything. I just want to learn how to think about ideas like this without getting attached to a story in my head. Any honest opinions appreciated
