Are Birkin bags actually a better investment? Came across this chart and I’m curious what people think
I stumbled on a chart comparing average annual returns from 1980–2015 for different assets, and it honestly surprised me. According to the data:
• Birkin bags: 14.2% annual return
• S&P 500: 9.8% annual return
• S&P 500 (total returns): 12.7%
• Gold: 3.4%
The graphic claimed that Birkin bags on the secondary market actually beat both the S&P 500 and gold over that 35 year period.
I know luxury goods can appreciate, but I didn’t realize Birkins historically outperformed major asset classes by that much. Obviously they’re not as liquid, and authentication/condition matters a lot, but still… pretty wild.
What do you all think?
Is investing in Birkins a legit strategy, or is this cherry picked data / survivorship bias? Anyone here actually invest in luxury handbags as part of their portfolio?
