Me and my girlfriend just moved in together and wanted to start a joint savings account to save up for a car and a down payment on a house. We are both adding to the account on a monthly basis and hope to accomplish that within 2-3 years. Instead of a traditional savings account, I decided to open a Fidelity portfolio and invest it all into the FNILX (their S&P 500 equivalent). It seems to be performing well year after year with low risk. For the record, this is by no means my idea of a get rich quick scheme. Just trying to put our money somewhere safe and hopefully make a little bit more dividends than I would on interest from a traditional savings account. Is this a good idea?
