As time goes on, the retail investors will focus more and more on individual stocks and therefore, percentage-wise, less and less funds will flow into ETFs. Plus, an increasing number of long-term ETF investors are close to retirement and they will withdraw funds.
Index returns are driven by the performance of the underlying companies, but if there won't be as much buying pressure, will it lead to a slower average annual return?
