advice on structured products for investment

I am hoping to get people's opinions on "structured products" - which seem to be a potentially good way to get good returns with some bond like risk protection. Supposedly, it's available to me without a commission [but not fees/markup inside product].

I understand this isn't supposed to be personal advice, but just for a reference point: Specifically looking at major bank / index based (low risk insolvency issues). Without getting political, I think the current US administration are causing a lot of market uncertainty, which seems bad for SP's. Probably looking at income more than growth, since we're getting close to retirement.

Outside any general advice, one question I would have:

1. there really isn't an easy way to determine fees that are baked in, but does that matter? if the terms are clear, then those terms represent my potential gain/loss WITH the bake in already, correct?

tl;dr - If you generally like them, sell me. If you don't like them, warn me why. Trying to learn; understand the mechanics but not the subtleties.

Thanks!
