Is investing based on market cap considered direct indexing?

I’m trying an investment/trading platform that lets me manage a bunch of stocks based on market cap and still treat it as a single investment. I’m starting with the top 50 in the S&P so I can get most of the exposure I want but also remove a couple companies I don’t like and increase the weights of a few I believe in.

Does this count as direct indexing? Would it still be considered direct indexing if I only stuck with the top 20 stocks (I’ve come across some ETFs that are only the top 20 anyway)? Or realistically when people say “direct indexing” for the S&P do they mean all 500 stocks?

I don’t have a ton of money and this platform doesn’t have minimum account sizes so I’m just dipping my toes into direct indexing management, just curious about the consensus on this or any advice!
