Extremely worried about the market and economy in general, what should I do?

I'm a 24 y/o American, no debt, currently maxing out a Roth IRA. My expenses are low, so I have a solid monthly take home (\~4k after expenses) to invest/save how I want, along with 15k in an index fund (VTI) and \~25k in a CMA (\~4% interest).

From what I've read, typically it's a good plan to put most of my money into a diversified index fund like VTI and leave it there long-term (especially since I have low expenses and can eat short-term losses). But with Trump's economic policies and the overall state of our economy, I'm very concerned about putting any money into stocks at this point. People are talking about a possible recession, but I'm genuinely concerned about something even worse, like a significant decline in the dollar's value and/or an asset bubble bursting.

Would it make any sense for me to invest in assets that would protect me in the case of a major crisis? Gold & precious metals, foreign currencies, international stocks, etc.? Or leave most of my money in a CMA/HYSA until things calm down?

Or am I completely overreacting here? Should I just continue to pump my money into an index fund and not worry about it?
