Lost years and wondering where I stand

Hi everyone,

I turned 29 yesterday and currently earning $80K per year in a full-time role.

My financial path hasn’t been traditional. Over the past decade, I went through an on-and-off 4-year gap from full-time work. Those years weren’t planned — life just happened. I drifted for a while, unsure of my career direction, and lost a lot of momentum during a time when many of my peers were building theirs. I won’t sugarcoat it. I do feel a sense of regret about the lost time.

That said, if there’s one thing I held onto through everything, it was financial discipline. I lived extremely frugally, minimized expenses, avoided debt, and kept investing whatever small amounts I could manage.

Now that I’m steadily employed again, I’m trying to rebuild with purpose and more urgency.

Here’s where I stand financially today:

Income and Expenses

Annual Gross Income $80,000

Monthly Take-Home Pay (after taxes) ~$5,000

Monthly Expenses

Rent + Utilities $1,500

Groceries + Food $400

Miscellaneous(phone, entertainment )$300

Total spending : $2200

Saving : $2800

Assets

High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA) $60,000

Brokerage Account (mostly Index Funds - VT) $90,000

Retirement Accounts (IRA + small 401k
rollover) $40,000

Total Assets $200,000

Reflection:

Retirement math evades me despite my best efforts. I struggle to grasp compounding. Wondering if I’m on the right track to have a reasonably comfortable retirement.

I know I can’t get back the years I lost, but I’m proud that I never let things spiral financially.
At this point, I’m just trying to move forward steadily, and hopefully make the next decade count.

I can write that too if you want!
