Is gold the inflation hedge it appears to be?

So,I had purchased a few gold coins over the years from different [sources.It](http://sources.It) seems like a great way of accumulating wealth.Looking at the actual costs involved is another thing.

For example,I purchased one coin from a dealer and paid spot plus a 20% fee, which was the best I could [do.Now](http://do.Now),when I decide to sell it,I will also pay a 20% markup.Because the gold coins are not liquid enough, there are very few ways to convert to USD ,effectively. They are useless as an investment, making them a feel good move.Just try paying for groceries and find out.

Wouldn't it make more sense to invest in liquid assets ? As bad as the S&P has been recently it is still far ahead in terms of actual value while considering the cost of purchasing and reselling physical gold.

Any comments out there?
