Which investment accounts are worth having as a Canadian on a work permit in the US

I may be asking this question in the wrong sub, but I really don't understand why it would be worth it to contribute to a 401k or IRA when the withholding tax is 30%.

How do TN holders go about regularly investing? Is it as simple as selling while in the correct country, or using a non-registered account instead?
