Days like today should remind you why, no matter how smart or connected you are, you should use a professional advisor.
I had a conversation with my advisor back in August and basically said I wanted to go from long positions to short positions if not neutral before the election, as I saw market turmoil to be inevitable regardless of who we elected because well, the casino is broken. Anyway, my advisor from Morgan Stanley talked me off the edge, convinced me to go neutral (in my late 20s) increased my cash position, created a hedge, and I’m only down ~0.5% with what they refer to as a 2 out of 4 risk profile. If you were very long, gambling with options, or surprised Pikachu the past few days I’ve got no sorrow for you guys. Nothing about this shit was surprising. And more so than that, if you’ve got more than a couple hundred grand in the market, you’re a fool to manage yourself unless your a felon or something and can’t get a good advisor.
Anyway sky isn’t falling. S&P has come up within 2 years in 10 out of the last 12 crashes, and within the year in 8 of the last 12, and 12 out of 12 times has come back. I hope a lot of the retail investors on this sub learn that there’s a reason these people exist, they serve great utility, and the peace of mind they allow you to have so you can focus on whatever you’re good at and creates value, while they protect yours.
Yeah did I miss some value by not going short, sure? But I didn’t have to worry about timing anything, and I’d say my lack of losses are just as attractive as risky gains in this situation.
