Is it ever okay to purchase individual stocks?

The advice I usually get is to always choose index funds. My 401k already does this, but my employer also offers an associate stock purchase plan where we can purchase company stock at a discount. I take advantage of both to get my full match. The 401k has significantly more funds in it.
Since I work for a blue chip company I consider my stock account to be like a “satellite” to my broader and diversified 401k.

Now that I’ve started a Fidelity account, I’be decided to invest in tech. I’m excited about AI and the future this will bring. I think tech has been great the past decade and to my knowledge isn’t slowing down but continuing to evolve. I chose FTEC but since they’re all US companies, I wondered if I shouldn’t do the same “satellite” investment with FTEC being the broad and diversified investment and I could select Samsung (something not in FTEC but blue chip and pays dividends) and purchase a small amount (less than 10% of what I put into FTEC) to broaden my portfolio.

But I’ve also been told don’t chase individual stocks and stick with index funds only. Most of the economy’s growth will come from just a handful of companies and the chances you’ll guess right are slim.
