Why do people spend money on getting lottery tickets instead of investing consistently?

The reason I asked this question is because I have some friends in my life who are more concerned about trying to get lottery tickets on a daily basis versus having me sit down with them for 20 minutes to open up an account and start investing into abroad index fund. I know investing is slow and not some HUGE amount of money. But its sad to see people basically throw money out the window. They have a enough time in their life to still have a 7 figure account but absolutely refuse to do so.
