Would you say the market is going to continue to drop? Should I move these funds into a money-market until I figure this situation out?
I inherited $1 million from my grandmother, managed by her long-time broker through American Funds (Capital Group). Half of the money is locked until I’m 45, and I received the other $350,000 immediately.
In November, the broker called me while I was driving and invested the $350,000 without my clear consent. He claimed I wouldn’t have to pay fees, but I later found out the money was locked into funds with an 18-month penalty if I withdrew early.
In December, I told him I was worried about investing so much in high-volatility funds. He dismissed my concerns and started talking about politics to justify staying invested.
In February, I asked him to move $65,000 into a more conservative fund. He said he’d handle it that day — but when I checked my account recently, I saw he never made the transfer. When I called him, he gave excuses and again brought politics into the conversation, which I find completely inappropriate when dealing with my money.
My account is now down $50,000. I’m a 31-year-old mother to a young child, and I want to safeguard this money immediately. I’m afraid that everything is going to keep dropping, and I don’t want this man ruining any of my finances any longer.
I am looking into this with American funds now but want to know if it would be smart to move these into a money market fund until I have things figured out. Would this be a smart move? Or would it be smart to just ride it out right now?
Is the general consensus that things are going to continue to keep dropping? I need some advice on what I can do in the meantime till I get this figured out with capital group
