It’s been three months since I(28) was laid off, and while I’ve been actively applying and interviewing, I still haven’t landed a new role. I know job searches take time, but I’m starting to feel frustrated and anxious, especially about my finances.
Here’s where I stand financially:
• Total assets: ~$162K (including severance)
• $100K in Fidelity (mix of ETFs and stocks)
• $32K in a high-yield savings account
• $17K in Robinhood (mostly stocks)
• $4K in retirement accounts (down from market fluctuations)
• $3K in gold
• $2K in checking
• $2K expected from severance (last bit of it)
Debt : $0
• Expenses: ~$2.2K/month (rent + living expenses)
• Unemployment: I’ve applied and expect ~$2,200/month starting in April/May, but nothing’s confirmed yet.
I’m living as frugally as possible—renting an affordable place, not spending on extras, and trying to stretch my savings. But seeing my balance slowly shrink without any income is getting to me. Logically, I know I have a decent cushion, but emotionally, it feels like I’m falling behind.
For those who’ve been through something similar, how did you manage the financial stress and uncertainty? I could use some perspective—am I overthinking this, or should I be more concerned?
