Why do research analysts prepare "expectations" for company quarterly results?

Why do analysts publish how they think a company will perform each quarter? If they're right or wrong it doesn't change anything and if they're wrong the stock always drops. Seems like there is no upside.

A lot of frustration in life (not just investing) is unmet or unrealistic expectations. So why do it? What/who *specifically* benefits from these?
