Today I succumbed to two moments of panic. This morning I sold about 30% of what I own several index funds. They were all long-term holds and all sold for gains. A few hours later I realized to make a horrible mistake and bought them all back, same exact shares, all the funds being slightly higher than when I sold.
I read that when you buy back stock that you sold the same day, as long as you are not violating the wash loss rule, you don't pay the capital gains tax.
I'm looking to get verification that this is correct, and if Robin hood, my trading platform, lists them as gains on my 1099 next year, what should I do? (I already asked their support team, they said consult a tax professional).
