The market looks strong, but it is so weak underneath...

I keep coming back to how strange this market feels right now. On the surface, $SPY and $QQQ are still sitting near highs so the easy read is that investors are still confident and the rally is holding up. But when you look underneath the index, it feels much less stable than the headline numbers suggest.

A lot of the strength is still concentrated in a handful of large tech and AI names, while plenty of individual stocks are already getting whacked. I'm not saying a crash is imminently coming but it does make me more cautious than I would be if participation were broader.

The issue with leadership that is this narrow is that the index can look fine until the leaders finally start to give way and then things can change very quickly. If say $NVDA, $MSFT, $META, $AMZN, or the big semi and ai infrastructure names keep holding up, the market can probably grind higher. But if those names start to weaken, I’m not sure there are enough other areas ready to pick up the slack. (look out below)

This is the trend I think everyone should be paying close attention to. So I’m not really in the “everything is fine” camp or the “crash is definitely coming” camp. I just think this is one of those markets where the index is telling one story and the average stock is telling another.
