Silver Is Holding Near $66 Even as Markets Price Another Rate Hike

Silver was trading around $66 an ounce this week even as markets assigned roughly a 90% probability to another Federal Reserve rate increase in December.

That is an unusual combination. Higher rates and a stronger dollar normally create pressure for precious metals because cash and interest-bearing assets become more competitive.

One resilient session does not prove that silver has broken its relationship with interest rates. It may simply reflect positioning, short covering or expectations that tighter policy will eventually weaken economic growth.

Still, the relative strength is worth watching.

Silver has both monetary and industrial demand. Rate expectations can hurt the investment side, while electrification, electronics and solar manufacturing continue to consume metal. The market is also expected to remain in a structural deficit, although higher prices should encourage additional recycling.

For silver miners, the key question is not simply whether silver rises. It is whether the metal can remain strong while energy, labour and financing costs stay elevated. A higher silver price creates limited value if operating margins do not expand with it.

If silver continues holding up under tighter monetary policy, would that suggest underlying physical demand is becoming more important or are investors reading too much into a short-term move?
