I've been working with a 13-point checklist for evaluating companies, loosely built on classic value principles. Each check gets scored 1 to 5:
1. EPS trend
2. ROE trend
3. ROIC
4. Debt-to-equity
5. Free cash flow
6. Profit margins
7. Retained earnings
8. Graham intrinsic value
9. DCF value
10. Margin of safety
11. Competitive moat
12. Management quality
13. Price-to-book
Some of my thresholds are simple. ROE has to clear 20%, and debt-to-equity should sit somewhere around 0.8 to 1.5. The last few are judgment calls: moat and management don't reduce to a number, and I go back and forth on how much weight they deserve.
A few things I'm unsure about:
\- Price-to-book feels close to useless forou still use it?
\- Graham value and DCF often disagree badly. Which do you trust when they do?
\- Is there something you check every time that isn't on this list?
Curious what your own lists look like, especially what you've dropped over the years.
