Fed Countdown: Futures flat, Yields up. What’s the play?

The divergence between macro policy and corporate earnings this morning is setting up a really weird backdrop for the 2 PM Fed decision. The bond market is aggressively pricing in a hawkish path, with the 10-year Treasury yield crossing the 5.01% threshold and the 2-year sitting at 4.67%.

Under any normal market regime, the 10-year pushing past 5% would instantly choke high-valuation growth equities. Instead, we are seeing Nasdaq futures defy gravity, clinging to a +0.29% green patch while Dow futures sit dead flat.

The real problem isn't the index divergence; it's the structural warning coming out of earnings. FactSet (FDS) is catching a solid 6% bid on its report, which is helping mask the broader tech malaise. But looking at the industrial economy, J.B. Hunt (JBHT) is getting completely hammered, down over 9% pre-market. A massive logistics miss usually means freight volumes and physical demand are drying up fast.

It also creates a massive contradiction. The Fed is widely expected to push through a 25 bps hike to a 3.75%–4.00% target range (the first increase since 2023) because they see an economy that still needs cooling. Yet, one of the biggest transport indicators in the country is signaling that a consumer slowdown is already well underway.

The market is deciding whether a 10-year yield holding above 5% will dissolve pre-market Nasdaq strength into a midday value rotation, or if the freight weakness is simply a lagging indicator meaning the 25 bps hike is already thoroughly priced in for an immediate relief rally.

If you are putting money to work today, how are you hedging?

UPDATE 2PM EDT:

The Fed just delivered a unanimous 25 bps hike to a 3.75%–4.00% target range, but the shock is a highly hawkish dot plot showing 16 of 18 officials expecting at least one more hike this year, with zero rate cuts planned until 2028. The Fed officially conceded that it will not reach its 2% inflation target until 2029, raising its near-term PCE forecasts and explicitly naming massive capital investment in artificial intelligence alongside Iran war oil shocks as structural inflationary forces. By upgrading their labor outlook to a lower 4.1% unemployment projection, policymakers are signaling they have the economic cushion to keep rates elevated, effectively looking right past the physical slowdown warnings from J.B. Hunt's morning miss. Nasdaq's morning resilience is now facing an extreme valuation stress test as the 10-year yield aggressively marches back toward its multi-year highs.
