Here’s a short excerpt:
Value investors care far more about the reliability of profits than about a one-time spike. A company that earned a fortune last year because of a fluke — a lawsuit windfall, a one-off asset sale, or a temporary surge in demand — hasn’t necessarily proven anything durable about itself.
A company that has quietly grown its earnings year after year, through good economies and bad, has proven something much more useful: that it owns something the world reliably wants. Benjamin Graham recommended looking at average earnings over many years precisely to smooth out the flukes and reveal the true earning power underneath.
One great year is an anecdote. A decade of rising profits is a track record, and track records are what you’re buying.
