Why is retail underperforming the market this year?

From what I’ve been seeing from online research, retail investors are underperforming the broader market on average this year.

This narrative has been going around for about a month now and it’s kinda weird to me.

Just last year, the narrative was that retail was outperforming the index and asset managers, and now retail is massively underperforming based on retail flows for the most popular retail stocks.

Is it mostly because people are constantly rotating in and out of positions? Taking profits too early? Chasing whatever sector is hot? Or just holding too many individual names and Cash

I don’t really take these forms of research too seriously, but wonder if Reddit agrees with this research
