Super Micro up by 17% on Wednesday on $60B in new orders n data center with SpaceX. Everyone wants only AI picks and shovels not the diggers
The broader market had one of its bad weeks in this month, Alphabet down 6-7%, Tesla down 12-14%, both fell because of AI capex either rising too fast or eating too deep into cash flow. Same week on Wednesday, Super Micro Computer, the server maker that builds a lot of the physical hardware these AI data centers actually run on, jumped 17% before the open after announcing that it took in over $60 billion in new orders last quarter and revealed a partnership with SpaceX to build an AI data center.
Alphabet and Tesla are the ones spending the capex, building their own infrastructure, and the market is increasingly nervous about whether that spending converts into returns fast enough. Super Micro is one of the companies receiving that capex, it sells the servers, racks, and cooling systems that hyperscalers buy. So in a week where two of the biggest AI spenders fell specifically for spending, the company on the other end of that spending had one of its best days of the year.
The 'picks and shovels' side of the AI trade keeps putting up strong, uncomplicated numbers, more orders, more backlog, more revenue, while the actual spenders keep getting interrogated on whether the return shows up. That's not necessarily contradictory, infrastructure sellers get paid regardless of whether the AI bet pays off for the buyer. The risk sits entirely with whoever's paying, not whoever's receiving it.
The SpaceX data center partnership specifically deserves attention because SpaceX building out AI data center capacity is a new demand its own way, one more thing SpaceX is spending money on beyond rockets and Starlink, which can be seen both ways for anyone holding SPCX, it's diversification, but it's also one more capital-intensive bet on top of a company already burning cash on Starship development.
So, does the SMCI rise versus the Alphabet/Tesla fall make the sell the spenders, buy the infrastructure sellers trade preference justified. Everyone wants to own the shovel seller and skip the guy digging. It's a fair instinct. But, the shovel seller's entire order book is a bet that the guy digging doesn't stop. This week's 17% rise and this week's AI capex panic are the two sides of the same story and only one ending can make both of them right.
