One detail buried in today's tariff headlines deserves more attention. The newest U.S. tariff package specifically exempted copper and critical minerals, reinforcing a broader trend already taking shape. Reuters also reported that U.S. demand for rare-earth magnets reached roughly 48,000 metric tons last year while domestic production supplied only about 300 tons, and China still controls more than 80% of global mineral refining. Governments increasingly view critical minerals as strategic infrastructure because modern economies, AI data centers, electric grids and defense systems simply dont function without them.
That raises another question: if North America needs more mines, how does the industry find and operate them more efficiently? That's one reason NRED has been interesting to follow. The company recently expanded its Wilmac Project to nearly 39.7k acres, committed $8.5M to earn a 70% interest, and plans another 53 miles of IP and AMT surveys before drilling. On top of the exploration work, MetalCore has grown into a database of 4+ million geological records designed to rank and refine drill targets before millions of dollars are spent putting holes in the ground.
The operational side is what caught my attention even more. Through its agreement with EyeX, NRED is looking beyond exploration into day-to-day mine operations. The platform is designed to analyze feeds from existing security cameras, drones and other visual infrastructure already deployed across a site, allowing operators to add AI capabilities without replacing their hardware. That matters because unplanned equipment downtime can cost $5,000-$20,000 per hour for large haul trucks, while a single failure can cascade through shovels, crushers and processing plants, turning into losses approaching $2 million in a day on large open-pit operations. Even smaller studies estimate haul-truck downtime at more than $1,000 per hour, before repair costs are included. AI that identifies hazards, tracks equipment movement, monitors stockpiles or flags maintenance issues earlier only has to prevent a handful of these events to justify its deployment
What I like is that these ideas complement each other. Better exploration software to reduce the number of unnecessary drill holes. Better operational software to help future mines extract more value from infrastructure that's already in place. As governments push to secure more domestic mineral supply, I think the companies combining quality geology with practical technology will be worth paying close attention to
