$KOPN: 150%+ Up Since My Previous Post - Last Few Weeks As a Penny Sock?
So first of all, despite the click-baity title, I’m not so petty or naive to be treating this as some kind of victory lap - I know sometimes things can and do turn on a dime for companies of this size and it’s too early to be jubilant. But, some more details have emerged since my last post on the 16th of March (then **$2.10,** now **$5.50\~,** though it has briefly dropped under $5 several times over the past few days) which some of you might find reassuring, if not encouraging, and hopefully the momentum currently building up will be enough for me to post about $KOPN for the last time here as we begin our ascent towards the analysts’ price targets.
Secondly, I have decided to reuse the images from my previous post as well as some of the text but I have updated the information to reflect the new details I have since unearthed so just bear with me - it’s not a straight up copy/paste job.
To those of you who are new to the company, Kopin is a U.S. technology company that develops ultra-small microdisplays and optical systems for military, industrial, AR/VR, and consumer applications. It’s especially known for supplying display tech used in helmet-mounted systems, thermal sights, augmented-reality headsets, and other near-eye devices.
Anyway, without further ado, here are my **10 reasons to go long on $KOPN right now.**

* **1) A technological moat that is hard to beat**
With the Pentagon’s push for all-U.S. manufacturing and the focus on domestic production of critical military components, Kopin is quickly positioning itself to grab the attention of the DoW and capitalize on the new legislation. While many U.S. manufacturers are still fabless, Kopin boast multiple, ISO 9001:2015- and ISO 13485-certified Class 10 cleanrooms (2nd highest class) across the U.S. & UK, own 200+ patents and have recently announced the [establishment of full-scale U.S. OLED MicroDisplay manufacturing capability](https://www.kopin.com/press-releases/kopin-establishes-full-scale-u-s-oled-microdisplay-manufacturing-capability-to-meet-growing-domestic-defense-demand/). They are also the only company in the U.S. offering MicroLED, OLED, AMLCD, bi-directional pixel architectures, AI-enabled backplates, and FLCoS spatial-light-modulator products under one banner. Their R&D continues to be funded by the government through Phase I & II SBIR awards, giving them the ability to develop some of their technology without having to pay out of their own pockets. The quality of their products is really hard to beat, which is why they were selected by Elbit Systems to produce Helmet-Mounted Display Systems for the F-35 fighter jet, as well as by Lockheed Martin to produce Visual Display Subsystems for the replacement to the Stinger which is currently in the works. * **2)** [**A contract increase**](https://www.kopin.com/press-releases/kopin-receives-contract-increase-for-u-s-armys-next-generation-short-range-interceptor-ngsri-visual-display-subsystem-vds/) **for the U.S. Army's Next Generation Short Range Interceptor (NGSRI) Visual Display Systems through** ***Lockheed Martin.***
Primes know when to build in-house and when to outsource, and when Lockheed Martin (LMT) goes head-to-head with Raytheon (RTX) on a major Army program, I don't think they'll be taking chances on a jingus rig in a backyard shed when it comes to sourcing the components. Just as a bit of background, NGSRI is being developed to create lower-cost alternatives to the currently unsustainably expensive defenses against drones, cruise missiles and helicopters. In other words, the Army is looking for a potential replacement for the 40+ year old Stinger system which, through its lifespan, has been exported to 20\~ countries in multi-billion transactions (NATO still continues to order more). Should Lockheed succeed and retain Kopin as a supplier, there is potential for large revenue (tens of millions based on a moderately sized order of 5,000 systems, not including upgrades, spares and support). In January,[ Lockheed announced they successfully completed the first flight test](https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2026-01-13-Lockheed-Martin-Successfully-Completes-First-Flight-Test-of-NGSRI) of NGSRI - **ahead of Raytheon**, who are lagging behind and to date have only managed a ballistic test, but not a *full flight test*. Now, this is as far as the information went in my last post, but since then they announced that a) they [successfully completed the Seeker Characterization Flight Test (SCFT)](https://news.lockheedmartin.com/2026-05-11-Lockheed-Martin-Proves-Seeker-Capabilities-for-US-Army-Next-Generation-Short-Range-Interceptor-Competition) \- a critical risk reduction milestone for the program, and b) posted [several NGSRI-specific vacancies](https://www.lockheedmartinjobs.com/search-jobs/ngsri/694/1/1) on their website, with language used emphasizing “production ready logic,” “delivery,” “manufacturing flow,” and scaling. This may suggest the program is mature enough that Lockheed is staffing for sustained execution rather than just concept studies, though the expected announcement date of 2027 still remains.

* **3)** [**$15M order**](https://www.kopin.com/press-releases/kopin-announces-breakthrough-microled-based-optical-interconnect-technology-for-ai-infrastructure-in-collaboration-with-fabric-ai/) **to develop breakthrough MicroLED-based Optical Interconnect Technology for AI infrastructure**
Now, this one turned a lot of heads recently. Why?
>“Data centers consume an outsized portion of the world’s energy and are rapidly increasing. Neural I/o™ will be designed to achieve the same functional outcome with a fraction of the power by using photons instead of electrons to move data, eliminating copper interconnects and expensive laser-based systems entirely. The collaboration combines Kopin’s deep expertise in MicroLED materials, process development, and manufacturing with Fabric.AI’s system-level design, marketing and sales focus being developed for AI factory infrastructure. Under the agreement between the companies, Kopin owns 19.9% of Fabric.AI and will be the exclusive manufacturer of the Neural I/o™ chipsets.”
In one of the recent interviews, the CEO said:
>“The first question I always get is “Why Fabric?”. We’ve been working on bi-directional displays for over two years - we’ve actually invented it. We also have in production today, flying in an aircraft - which I can’t talk about - MicroLED which is capable of 6 million nits of brightness. If you take these two concepts and merge them together, it becomes an optical transceiver capable of transmitting data at 1.6 TB/s.
>When I looked at my board and we discussed investing at least 30-40 million dollars of Kopin cash and then another 10-15 million on marketing, it didn’t become evident that this was something I wanted to spend cash on. So instead, I worked with my investors and we said let’s create a new vehicle, a new company, that’s called Fabric.AI. We put in a new management team that knows how to sell to hyperscalers. Kopin does not know how to do that - we don’t have the staff for it, we didn’t have the experience for it, and we don’t have the SGNI to do it today, so let’s give that to Fabric.AI. Kopin will own 19.9% - after dilution (not now - they’ve got enough cash for now). What Kopin gets is:
>**1.** An order for 15 million dollars to prove the concept this year.
>**2.** An order next year to take it to production - so **this thing is coming and it’s coming next year.**
>Kopin is going to stick to our knitting which is **selling to defence companies like Palantir, Anduril - these folks we’re already doing business with.** And the government, some three-letter agencies that also need this technology.”
This is smart play from Kopin. The technology is fast-changing and carries significant risk, and so has been, to a degree, de-coupled from the main body and turned into an entity of its own. Kopin own a large chunk which stays constant regardless of future dilution, giving the investors of an already successful defense company exposure to the AI market without the pure play do-or-die levels of risk, but with a potentially large upside further down the road. Michael went on to say:
>“And then the semiconductor companies, **the Big Five - Nvdia, AMD, Intel, Samsung and Micron** (Technologies) - **we’ll work with those companies** because we need to know the interfaces that they’re operating with. Take Nvdia’s open architecture - we’re working to understand that and adopt that in our technology. And **we’ve already signed two very specific NDAs for this technology with two of the Big Five**.
>This technology could be this year 25% of our revenue, maybe half of our revenue next year and by 2028 might eclipse our defense revenue.”
You can imagine what would happen to a $5 stock if even one of those names expressed explicit interest in Kopin, leave alone two of them. As for the tech specs:
>“With multiple channels we’re able to achieve about 1.6 TB/s which we want to demonstrate this year. Next year we think we can get to 3.6.”
On a straight throughput basis, 3.6 TB/s = 28.8 Tb/s, so it would be 2.25x a [1.6 TB/s pluggable optical module](https://www.senko.com/eoptolink-and-senko-announce-the-next-generation-of-1-6tb-s-pluggable-optical-modules-using-sn-and-sn-mt-optical-connectivity/) class and [1.8x Ayar Labs’ 16 Tbps bidirectional optical-I/O package demo](https://ayarlabs.com/blog/in-package-optical-i-o-versus-co-packaged-optics-lets-get-technical/). It would also **match Nvdia’s announced** [**3.6 TB/s per-GPU NVLink 6 bandwidth** on Rubin](https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/rubin-platform-ai-supercomputer) (Ahhh $POET, you guys were so close!). So if they really reach 3.6 TB/s, that would put them right at the top of the current announced per-device interconnect class rather than clearly ahead of it. Broadcom’s 102.4 Tbps CPO switch is much larger in absolute aggregate bandwidth, but that is a switch-level number, so it is not apples-to-apples with a per-GPU or per-module figure. Same as Nvdia but far less power-hungry, smaller and cheaper? I’d take it.

* **4) Incredible opportunities in the field of MicroLED microdisplays for augmented reality (AR) visual systems for soldiers.**
Depending on what type of AR systems you look at, the current market for just military applications is already valued at about[ $1.7B](https://industrytoday.co.uk/aerospace/military-augmented-reality-market-size-share-forecast-us172-bn-2025-to-us676-bn-2034-at-164-cagr)\-[$3.2B](https://www.wiseguyreports.com/reports/military-augmented-reality-ar-headgear-market), with projections of 12%-16% CAGR by 2034-2035, bringing the totals in some scenarios to double digits in a decade's time. Having primarily followed military stocks of various flavours in the past few years, I think there is a number of factors to justify these valuations and their increases. War has always been a complex business but in the era of drones and high-tech ISR, clarity on the battlefield and enhanced situational awareness will be key, and AR systems will be able to, as one article puts it better than I could, "*reduce cognitive burden on soldiers by delivering mission-critical information — maps, enemy positions, waypoints, and threat alerts — directly within their field of vision, without requiring them to look away from the battlefield*". It is only in recent years that the relevant tech got small, fast and smart enough for these systems to mature into field-worthy products. As armies around the world carry on with their eternal quest to modernize and large-scale integration of AR into their training routines gets underway, KOPN is already here, as are the 400,000 defense vision systems they have shipped out to date.

* **6) Price targets which have been adjusted several times over the past few weeks**

* **7)** **Rapidly growing presence in the drone market**
Another reason why the military AR market is expected to grow substantially over the next 10 years is the drone + AR platform convergence. Anyone who has followed military stocks or even just the global news over the past few years, must be aware of how large a part drones play in modern warfare. Many various components are used in the manufacturing of modern UAS and optics play no small part. Highly successful emerging players such as ONDS and UMAC (both of whom I have, coincidentally, been invested in for a good while without knowing they had had an eye on KOPN) obviously recognize the importance of this and see it as a worthwhile investment. The Trump Jr.-backed UMAC seems like an especially promising revenue stream in the short term as not only have they been using KOPN's optics in their FPV goggles for a while now, the CEO also said that about half of the recent[ Drone Dominance Program Gauntlet 1 winners](https://dronedominance.mil/leaderboard.html) are UMAC customers so I expect a trickle-down effect should reach KOPN in not too distant future (ONDS, I assume, needs no introduction - it was being touted quite loudly here only last year and has since hit mid-teens). The Gauntlet, may I add, was just the 1st out of 4 Gauntlets planned by the DoW - each with an increasing number of drones being procured, and the recent ban on Chinese parts/push by the DoW to prioritize domestic supply chains only stands to benefit UMAC and, consequently, KOPN. Overall, I think this placement meaningfully reduces liquidity risk and gives KOPN capital to scale production and absorb near-term working capital needs. Not only is this a good de-resking pot of money for a small cap like KOPN, ONDS and UMAC (together with THEON) have also invested $41M in KOPN. What's great about this is that these are strategic, defense-aligned investors which further increases commercial leverage - i.e., capital *plus* potential route-to-market partners rather than just passive financiers. Also, two things happened since my last post. Firstly, UMAC announced they will soon be ordering $75M worth of raw materials and components to satisfy the current drone demand. Secondly, KOPN announced a[ $3.2 Million Initial Contract for Innovative First Person Viewer Optical Modules, Marking Entry into the FPV Drone Market](https://www.kopin.com/press-releases/kopin-awarded-3-2-million-initial-contract-for-innovative-first-person-viewer-optical-modules-marking-entry-into-the-fpv-drone-market/).
The CEO also said:
>“We just announced a major award with one of the top three Drone Dominance competition winners. We’re talking about building 20,000 headsets next year, 20,000 headsets the next year. These are 25-50 million dollar orders for Kopin. (...) We just received our first award out of **many that we’re expecting out of the top 10 Drone Dominance competition winners** as well as some of our partners that I’ve mentioned already on this call ($THEON, $UMAC & $ONDS) - they’re going to be working with us on this technology.”

* **8) Solid foothold within the NATO procurement machine**
>“Some of the investment we received was from Theon International ($THEON) - one of the fastest growing companies in Europe. They’re helping us grow in Europe, NATO and Southeast Asia. They just received a 1 billion dollar night vision award from NATO. We’re working with them to develop our DarkWAVE technology so it latches onto these night vision goggles, adds thermal, adds colour and telemetry to a standard night vision goggle.”
The entry into the NATO market is a huge win for $KOPN and the fact that $THEON (like $UMAC) are both investing in **and** buying from them has a two-fold benefit for the balance sheet. Once that $1B award for $THEON starts trickling down to their suppliers, we should see not only more orders but hopefully more interest from other related companies who do business with NATO. **$THEON own over 50% of the night vision goggle and thermal weapon sight market globally, and that $1B contract was the largest single NVG procurement in European NATO history.**

* **9)** **$15.4M funding from US Gov to develop sovereign MicroLED production**
In a recent interview, the CEO Michael Murray said of the MicroLED technology:
>“The Chinese have them in production, and Russia has them in their night vision goggles, thermal weapon sights and in their aircraft. So they can see us before we see them. Therefore, the Secretary of War invested $15.4M in Kopin and asked us to build this sovereign MicroLED capability. That capability will go into multiple programs like **Soldier Borne systems**, thermal weapon sight, night vision goggles. We’ll have a full portfolio of displays for HUDs in helmets and aircraft, which we’re already working on.”
Michael stopped just shy of saying “Soldier Borne Mission Command”, which is the program which has seen Anduril Industries receive a $159M contract (after Microsoft fumbled the bag) to develop night vision and mixed reality systems - something KOPN are very familiar with - but in another interview he said:

Partners of Anduril for the SBMC program include Meta (for XR tech), Qualcomm (chips), Oakley, and Gentex (helmets), and Kopin is the only U.S.-based supplier of critical microdisplays used in AR/VR headsets for defense applications. This is a tremendous opportunity for Kopin and if successful, could solidify their position as the de facto leader in the microdisplay market in the U.S.

There has, of course, been more than that (orders from primes and Tier-1 aerospace companies) and I will list a few other things below but I think the above ten give the most food for thought. The current financials are nothing to write home about but nothing to scoff at, either, and I'm seeing some similarities to the earlier stages of the optics-related LightPath Technologies (LPTH) which has done very well for me to date. Importantly, the CEO said in a recent interview that they are **fully funded until at least Q2 2027 - no dilution needed**. Some financial strain was put on the company in September last year when the court ordered them to pay about $20M in damages over a dispute with another company from way back in 2006.
As it often happens with small cap defense companies, the revenue can be a bit lumpy and prone to the whims of the DoW machine so this should certainly be something to keep in mind. I have watched several interviews with the CEO and he seems to have his head fairly screwed-on which is always reassuring, especially in a company this size. All in all, I see it as a decent long-term play with potentially good returns from about 2027-2028, which means I'm not jumping into this head-long and I'll keep adding more shares in small lumps - hopefully by the time things take off I will have accumulated a fair amount.
