Copper inventories are up, but it's strategic stockpiling

Visible copper inventories have increased this year, particularly in COMEX warehouses. On the surface, that looks bearish. More supply sitting around. But the more I read into it, the more it looks like strategic behavior rather than weak fundamentals.

Metal is being concentrated in the US ahead of potential tariffs. The US is considering a 25% tariff on refined copper imports, and traders are positioning accordingly. Governments and industrial users are moving from "just in time" to "just in case" inventory strategies.

This is a higher price floor. Base in other words. If inventories are being held for security of supply insteaf of immediate consumption, so they're not available to the wider market. The market is increasingly assigning value to having copper in hand. AND that is exactly what changes the supply-demand math.

For copper bulls, this means the inventory build isn't a signal to sell. It's evidence that the market is treating copper as a strategic asset. For explorers, it means the incentive to find new supply is getting stronger.

I've been keeping a small watchlist of juniors in proven copper belts that could matter if this strategic inventory trend continues: NRED with Wilmac in BC's Quesnel porphyry belt plus software/ai angle for finding deposits and overseeing sites, Kodiak Copper with their MPD project, and Mogotes Metals in Arizona

In a market where copper is being stockpiled for security, juniors with projects in the right places become more interesting by day
