I’m watching a few under-$5 biotech names today for possible short setups. My focus is on stocks trading between **$1.50 and $5.00**, with enough volume/movement to actually trade, and preferably names with low or reasonable borrow fees.
This is not a “short everything blindly” list. A lot of these names are already beaten down, so entry matters. I’m mainly looking for **failed bounces**, **rejections at resistance**, or **clean breakdowns with volume**.
Not financial advice. These are trade setups, not long-term investment calls.
# 1. IOVA — Iovance Biotherapeutics
**Price area:** Low-$4s
**Bias:** Short watch / failed bounce setup
**Borrow:** Appears relatively attractive compared to most high-momentum biotech shorts, but confirm with your broker
**Key level:** $4.20–$4.35 rejection area
IOVA is one of the cleaner names on my watchlist because it has strong volume, real intraday movement, and a borrow profile that looks much more reasonable than a lot of other biotech runners.
The stock has had a strong move, but I’m not looking to chase it short while it is pushing. I’d rather see it fail near resistance.
# Trade plan
**Short idea:** failed push into **$4.20–$4.35**
**Target 1:** $3.90
**Target 2:** $3.70
**Stop / invalidation:** above $4.50
# Why I’m watching it
* 🔴 Strong move into resistance can set up a fade.
* 🔴 Biotech names that spike without follow-through often give back gains.
* 🔴 Heavy short interest can create volatility both ways.
* 🟢 Main risk: if it clears $4.50 and holds, this can squeeze hard.
# 2. BDTX — Black Diamond Therapeutics
**Price area:** Low-$2s
**Bias:** Breakdown / dead-cat bounce short
**Key level:** $2.45–$2.65 bounce zone
BDTX is already down hard, so I do **not** want to blindly short the low. The better setup would be a dead-cat bounce into resistance that fails.
When a biotech breaks down hard on volume, there is often another leg lower, but the first bounce can be violent. Entry discipline matters here.
# Trade plan
**Short idea:** failed bounce into **$2.45–$2.65**
**Target 1:** $2.15
**Target 2:** $2.00
**Stretch target:** $1.93
**Stop / invalidation:** $2.75–$2.85
# Why I’m watching it
* 🔴 Major breakdown with heavy volume.
* 🔴 Fresh technical damage.
* 🔴 If $2.15 breaks, a retest of the $2.00 area is realistic.
* 🟢 Main risk: already down a lot, so a sharp relief bounce is possible.
# 3. ESPR — Esperion Therapeutics
**Price area:** Low-$3s
**Bias:** Controlled short watch under resistance
**Key level:** $3.25–$3.40
ESPR is not as dramatic as some of the other names, but that may actually make it cleaner. It has enough liquidity and movement, but it is not necessarily an ultra-crowded squeeze name.
I’m watching to see whether it rejects under the $3.25–$3.40 area.
# Trade plan
**Short idea:** rejection below **$3.25–$3.40**
**Target 1:** $3.00
**Target 2:** $2.85
**Stop / invalidation:** above $3.40
# Why I’m watching it
* 🔴 Weak under-$5 biotech setup.
* 🔴 Enough volume to trade.
* 🔴 Clear near-term resistance area.
* 🟢 Main risk: headline-sensitive name, so I would not overstay without a stop.
# 4. SANA — Sana Biotechnology
**Price area:** Around $3
**Bias:** Short watch if it loses $3.00
**Key level:** $3.00 breakdown level
SANA is on watch because of the dilution/ATM angle. The company recently sold a meaningful amount of stock through its ATM facility, which makes rallies more suspicious to me.
That does not mean it has to go straight down, but for under-$5 biotech names, dilution risk matters. If the company is using strength to raise cash, the stock can struggle to sustain bounces.
# Trade plan
**Short idea:** break below **$3.00** with volume
**Target 1:** $2.91
**Target 2:** $2.75
**Stop / invalidation:** above $3.25
# Why I’m watching it
* 🔴 ATM/dilution overhang.
* 🔴 Weakness near a key psychological level.
* 🔴 Below $3.00, momentum sellers may step in.
* 🟢 Main risk: collaboration or pipeline headlines can squeeze this quickly.
# 5. FATE — Fate Therapeutics
**Price area:** Low-$2s
**Bias:** Bounce-fade candidate
**Key level:** $2.35–$2.50
FATE is another beaten-down biotech with enough movement to trade. I would not short it randomly in the middle of the range. I’m watching for a failed bounce into $2.35–$2.50.
# Trade plan
**Short idea:** failed bounce into **$2.35–$2.50**
**Target 1:** $2.10
**Target 2:** $2.00
**Stop / invalidation:** above $2.65
# Why I’m watching it
* 🔴 Beaten-down biotech bounce-fade setup.
* 🔴 Still technically weak unless it reclaims resistance.
* 🔴 Below $2.10, $2.00 becomes a natural magnet.
* 🟢 Main risk: low-priced biotech names can rip on sympathy momentum.
# 6. ALT — Altimmune
**Price area:** High-$2s / low-$3s
**Bias:** Low-borrow-fee short watch
**Key level:** $3.00–$3.15
ALT is more of a secondary watch for me. The main reason it is on the list is that the borrow fee appears relatively low compared to the more dangerous high-borrow biotech runners.
I would only be interested if it rejects the $3.00–$3.15 area or loses $2.80 with volume.
# Trade plan
**Short idea 1:** rejection near **$3.00–$3.15**
**Short idea 2:** breakdown below **$2.80**
**Target 1:** $2.65
**Target 2:** $2.50
**Stop / invalidation:** above $3.30
# Why I’m watching it
* 🔴 Weak under-$5 biotech setup.
* 🔴 Low-borrow-fee profile makes it more attractive than crowded high-cost shorts.
* 🔴 If $2.80 fails, downside momentum could pick up.
* 🟢 Main issue: not my highest-priority setup unless volume expands.
# Names I’m Avoiding
Some biotech / microcap names have huge movement, but the borrow is too expensive or too risky.
For example, names with borrow fees in the hundreds of percent are not my preferred shorts. Even if the chart looks bearish, the borrow cost and squeeze risk can make the trade unattractive.
I’m not interested in forcing a short just because a stock is up big. The borrow has to make sense, the spread has to be reasonable, and the stock needs enough movement without being impossible to manage.
# My Top 3 Short Watches
# 1. IOVA
Best combination of liquidity, movement, and borrow profile. I’m watching for a failed move into $4.20–$4.35.
# 2. BDTX
Best breakdown setup, but I would wait for a bounce. I do not want to chase it at the lows.
# 3. SANA
Best dilution-overhang setup. I like it more if it loses $3.00 with volume.
# Bottom Line
The biotech short setups I’m watching today are:
**IOVA, BDTX, ESPR, SANA, FATE, ALT**
My preferred approach is not to blindly short weakness. I’m looking for:
* Failed bounces into resistance
* Breakdowns through key support
* Volume confirmation
* Low or reasonable borrow fees
* Clear stop levels
Best setups for me right now:
**IOVA under $4.35–$4.50**
**BDTX failed bounce into $2.45–$2.65**
**SANA breakdown below $3.00**
Again, this is a trade watchlist, not a long-term investment opinion. Biotech shorts can squeeze violently, so I would keep stops tight and avoid oversized positions.
