Recently I am noticing articles about few companies are actually planning to launch data centers into space, mainly to take advantage of solar energy and the colder environment. So far, I've not come across any such companies that seem to be working on space-based computing or storage, but most of them appear to be private and still in the early stages. (Apart from SpaceX)
I'm curious if there are any other private players pursuing this technology that I might be overlooking. Also, are there any public companies that could benefit from this trend through launch services, satellite infrastructure, cloud partnerships, or hardware?
Do you think space-based data centers have a realistic business case over the next 10–20 years, given the challenges around launch costs, maintenance, and the regulatory hurdles that still need to be addressed? I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who's been following this space.
