3.1B in etf outflows the last 11 days. is this a buy signal? a little research

we've had $3.1 billion in etf outflows over the last 11 trading days. btc dropped in this time from 81k to 77k.

What I was interested in was: when has this happened before in recent years? And how did the share price react afterwards? i went back and looked at every comparable outflow episode since the etfs launched in 2024. the pattern is pretty consistent. Here are the results of my research:

february 2025: $3.2 billion out over 8 days. btc bottomed at $78k on day 8. then etfs flipped to inflows the same day and btc closed at $84,900.

january-february 2026: $3.8 billion out over 5 weeks. btc fell to the low $60k's. then march flipped positive, april added another $2 billion, btc rallied 26% off the low.

december 2024: $1.5 billion out over the holidays. january 2025 had $4.8 billion in inflows. btc hit its all-time high of $109k on january 20.

what stands out: every single major outflow cluster since launch has been followed by a recovery. not always immediately. not always quickly. but it reversed every time.

now the caveats, because there are some:

the feb 2026 episode was different. that was a 5-week structural regime, not a 2-week cluster. anyone buying every dip during that stretch had to sit through a 52% drawdown first.

Interestingly, the 90-day correlation between ETF inflows and the Bitcoin price has fallen to 0.16 this year. Essentially, this is just noise on a daily basis.

so this isn't a guaranteed buy signal. but historically speaking, heavy outflow clusters have been better times to buy than to sell.

I think the macro backdrop is the wildcard now. cpi (3.8%), hawkish fed, no rate cuts coming. that's what makes this different from dec 2024. But it is therefore still too early to draw a definitive conclusion. We will know more about this phase once the outflows are over.
