Why is everyone focused on Ethereum lately when everything seems to be going down?

Let me preface this by saying I have only a couple of thousand dollars invested in Ethereum and I really don’t know a lot about it. This is something an ex had encouraged me to buy and so I just invest a small amount each month ($20). It seems like everyone is freaking out about Ethereum specifically but everything is down. Bitcoin is down too, and when I look at my app, it lists a whole bunch of other coins that are also down. It seems like people are really split on whether to sell or not. I could use the money right now, but honestly, I am not desperate for it and I can hold out and hope that the market turns around.
