You get comfortable researching a sector you know nothing about without spending a year on it?

Most of my portfolio is in two or three industries I understand from my job and keep passing on good companies in sectors I've never studied. Every time I branch into something in the semiconductor industry, I get buried in vocabulary and cycle quirks and give up. How do you ramp up on a new sector without spending a year on it?
