Floating datacentres on refit cargo vessels

Just in case the AI bubble won’t burst I thought what could be an interesting so far under appreciated angle in the AI infrastructure industry.

I came across this post from last month from one of the largest container ships manufactures from Japan.

https://www.mol.co.jp/en/pr/2026/26021.html

They propose to build Floating Data Center ships converted from a second-hand vessel.

There are some obvious benefits compared to how datacentres are built currently:

1. 1 year construction time compared to 5-7 years for land based infrastructure. They plan to refit their existing ships.

2. cheaper cooling with sea water and less risk for regulatory issues for wasting locals drinking water

3. can relocate the whole datacentre from port to port between different countries

4. the size of their ships is massive and equals the size of the biggest land based datacentres

5. much less regulations compared to coastal based datacentres
