DD: Gold is the new BTC — The "Safe Haven" Narrative Is Dead

**TL;DR:** There was a literal war in the Middle East last month and gold fell 10%. Think about that.

# What just happened

On February 28, the US and Israel struck Iran. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. Oil went from $72 to $119 in under four weeks. The S&P dropped 8.74% from its peak. The Nasdaq officially entered correction.

Gold's response to an actual war? Down 10%+ in March alone. Gold's beta relative to the S&P hit 0.70 during the conflict, meaning it moved *with* stocks, not against them.

This is not a drill. This is the exact scenario gold is supposed to be built for. Geopolitical chaos, supply shock, global uncertainty — and gold sold off alongside equities.

The "safe haven" is not a safe haven.

# This is exactly what killed Bitcoin

Bitcoin peaked at a 0.92 correlation with the Nasdaq in 2025. The pitch was "uncorrelated, digital gold, hedge against the system." What actually happened is it traded like a leveraged tech stock with no earnings.

The logical conclusion was obvious: why hold Bitcoin when you could just hold Nvidia, which makes actual money? Once the diversification argument collapsed, so did the premium.

Gold is now at the same inflection point. If gold sells off when stocks sell off — and does so during a *war* — the entire reason to hold it over equities disappears. At least equities give you earnings.

# The short case

* An actual Middle East war just failed to produce safe-haven demand for gold
* Gold-to-S&P beta at 0.70 — it is correlated to a crazy degree
* The January 2026 ATH of $5,595 was a momentum/leverage trade, not a hedge bid
* Bitcoin already went through this exact narrative repricing and never recovered the "uncorrelated asset" premium
* But let's be honest, the real reason we should bet against gold is because I've never seen WSB more confident about an asset than they are about GLD right now

**Positions attached** please note the liquidity on deep OTM GLD positions is super bad so the "current value" is extremely unreliable.
