Target Date Retirement Funds, Why?

I’m currently selling a piece of property that I’ll likely net around $500k on. Im 20-25 years from retirement so a ways to go. I have a pension (safe) and a Fidelity brokerage account that I’m very aggressive with. I was thinking a target date retirement fund would be a decently conservative place to put the $500k but the returns are abysmal, barely more than SPAXX. That’s more conservative than I’d like. Unless someone wants to be super conservative why would anyone choose a target date retirement fund? Even the dividends arent great. btw I’m not just bashing those funds. It’s a genuine question. Maybe I’m missing something and a target date is where I should put my money after the sale. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
