Need advice - elderly mom windfall

My 74 year old mother just sold her home and will net about 100K after taxes and fees. She has a healthy monthly income from pension and ss, so this is all found money for her. Bad news is she is showing early signs of dementia. I’ve explained to her that this money should be saved in the event that she requires some kind of daily assistance in the next 5-10 years and she agrees. I’m fairly new to investing as most of my life was spent barely surviving. I’m considering the following for her: take $10K to keep as cash and invest the rest in a fidelity account with majority in foreign investments (Vanguard’s Total World Stock Index Fund - VT was suggested in another forum). Is this a reasonably safe plan? Anything she should know as far as investing as a retired person?
