I'm a public employee with a mediocre pension. I don't plan to be with the organization long enough to meet the magic 30 years that translates into a decent pension at 67 or 70.
Recently, I was offered a job with a local nonprofit which is pretty financially healthy at present. The salary would be competitive. And the job would be inspiring.
If I leave my current job I leave a pension of a decade and some other matching benefits. It is possible I could stay with my current organization up to 10-15 more years for a total of 25 years. But that's generous.
What are overall feelings on pensions? I believe I can invest reasonably well myself but there is something comforting about the diversification of a pension in addition to personal retirement savings, even if it's only a small pension.
For reference, 1.25M in investments + 2 modest pensions
200K mortgage
No other debt.
Spouse is also employed similarly, both early 40s.
Combined income $180,000.
