RXRX Short Thesis Update: Why I Still Think $2.70 or Lower Is in Play
**Ticker:** RXRX
**Company:** Recursion Pharmaceuticals
**Current area:** Low-$3s
**My bias:** Bearish short-term / tactical short
**Primary downside target:** $2.70
**Stretch target:** $2.50–$2.60
**Invalidation:** Reclaim and hold above $3.25–$3.35
# Thesis
I’m still looking at RXRX as a tactical short candidate.
The setup has not changed much from last week: the stock is trading near fresh 52-week lows, the broader technical trend remains broken, and the company is still a cash-burning clinical-stage biotech being valued mostly on future pipeline potential and the “AI drug discovery” narrative.
This is **not** a “company is going bankrupt tomorrow” thesis. That would be the wrong argument. RXRX still reported **$665.2M in cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash as of March 31, 2026**, and management says that supports runway into early 2028.
The short thesis is simpler:
**RXRX is still losing a lot of money, has no near-term product-sales revenue, recently hit new 52-week lows, and has a $300M ATM/dilution overhang sitting above the stock. In this market, I think rallies are likely to get sold unless a real catalyst changes the setup.**
# Current Price Action
RXRX recently hit a new 52-week low around **$2.79–$2.80**, after previously trading as high as **$7.18** over the past 52 weeks. That is a major deterioration in trend and shows the market is still repricing the story lower.
As of today, RXRX is trading around **$3.01**, with a market cap around **$1.59B**.
That means the $2.70 target is not a dramatic crash call. It is only about a 10% move from the low-$3 area, and the stock has already shown it can trade into the high-$2s.
# Key Technical Levels
# Support
**$2.86–$2.90:** near-term pivot area / recent support
**$2.79–$2.80:** current 52-week low zone
**$2.70:** first downside target
**$2.60–$2.50:** next downside pocket if $2.70 breaks with volume
# Resistance
**$3.10–$3.15:** first bounce/rejection zone
**$3.25–$3.35:** key invalidation zone
**$3.50+:** squeeze-risk area
**$3.70+:** larger trend resistance
My preferred short setup is still one of two things:
1. **A failed bounce into $3.15–$3.30**, or
2. **A clean break below $2.80 with volume.**
I do not like chasing after an already extended red move unless volume confirms the breakdown.
# Fundamental Bear Case
RXRX is still a clinical-stage biotech. That means the valuation is being driven by future milestones, platform credibility, partnerships, and investor appetite for speculative biotech/AI stories.
The latest Q1 numbers were mixed at best.
RXRX reported **Q1 2026 revenue of $6.5M** and a **net loss of $117.5M**. The loss did improve from the prior-year period, but this is still a company burning significant cash relative to current revenue.
The company also beat EPS expectations but missed revenue expectations by a wide margin, with [Investing.com](http://Investing.com) showing Q1 revenue of about **$6.47M versus $16.28M expected**.
So the bear case is not that the balance sheet collapses immediately. The bear case is that the market keeps discounting a long, expensive development timeline while the stock is technically weak and investor patience is fading.
# Dilution / ATM Overhang
This remains one of the biggest reasons I think bounces can get sold.
In February 2026, RXRX launched an **at-the-market offering program for up to $300M of Class A common stock through TD Cowen**. Sales can be made through Nasdaq or other permitted methods, and TD Cowen can receive compensation of up to 3% of gross proceeds.
The latest 10-Q indicated no shares were sold under the ATM during Q1, but the capacity remains available.
That matters.
It does **not** mean the company is dumping shares every day. But it does mean there is a standing supply overhang. If the stock bounces, traders have to ask whether management may use strength to raise capital.
For under-$5 speculative biotech names, that matters a lot. The penny-stock framework I use is simple: cash-burning companies often fund deficits through dilution, and dilution risk can cap rallies even when the story sounds exciting. The uploaded penny-stock notes specifically warn that biotech penny stocks are common because they often need significant funding before products are approved and generating revenue, with no guarantee of success.
# Why $2.70 Is Still Realistic
I still think RXRX has a realistic shot at touching **$2.70 or lower** in the near term, assuming no major bullish catalyst.
Reasons:
* The stock recently hit a new 52-week low.
* The trend remains bearish.
* The company is still deeply unprofitable.
* Revenue remains small relative to cash burn.
* The ATM creates a supply overhang on rallies.
* The AI biotech premium has cooled.
* A break of $2.79–$2.80 could trigger stop-loss selling and momentum shorts.
* The stock has not reclaimed the $3.25–$3.35 area that would suggest a stronger reversal.
Again, $2.70 is not a heroic downside target. From the current low-$3 area, it is a modest continuation move.
# What Could Break the Short Thesis?
This is not risk-free. RXRX can absolutely squeeze.
The biggest risks to the short thesis:
**Positive pipeline news**
A strong clinical update or FDA-related headline could move the stock quickly.
**Partnership news**
Anything involving a major pharma partner could trigger a violent move higher.
**Short squeeze risk**
The stock is beaten down, and crowded bearish trades can reverse fast.
**Oversold bounce**
RXRX is already near 52-week lows. Shorting weakness without a defined stop is dangerous.
**Cash runway is real**
The company is not in immediate survival mode. Management says runway extends into early 2028, which weakens any “imminent financing crisis” argument.
# My Trade Plan
# Entry idea
I prefer one of these setups:
* Short failed bounce near **$3.15–$3.30**, or
* Short breakdown below **$2.80** with volume.
# Target 1
**$2.72–$2.70**
# Target 2
**$2.60–$2.50** if $2.70 breaks cleanly.
# Stop / invalidation
**Conservative stop:** $3.25
**Wider stop:** $3.35
If RXRX reclaims and holds above **$3.35**, I would not stay stubbornly short.
# Bottom Line
RXRX may still be an interesting long-term AI drug discovery story, but the current trade setup remains weak.
The company is still years away from meaningful product revenue, still posting large quarterly losses, recently hit fresh 52-week lows, and has a $300M ATM overhang available. Unless a strong catalyst changes the picture, I think the path of least resistance remains lower.
**My view:** bearish short-term
**Target:** $2.70
**Stretch target:** $2.50–$2.60
**Confidence:** around 60%
**Invalidation:** reclaim and hold above $3.25–$3.35
Not financial advice. I’m looking at this as a trade, not a long-term investment debate.
